Perth’s climate adds another layer of complexity. Summer temperatures regularly top 40 degrees. UV exposure is among the highest in the world. - Budget panels: usually made by smaller or less established brands, often with limited Australian distribution and support. Warranties may run 10-12 years on the product and 25 years on performance. But the service part is typically excluded, so labour costs for a warranty replacement fall on you. Degradation rates can be higher, and field performance in Perth heat is less proven.
- Mid-tier panels: brands like Jinko, Trina, and Canadian Solar sit in this space. These are reputable manufacturers with a genuine Australian presence and solid performance histories. For many households, mid-tier panels are a sound choice. The trade-off is usually in warranty service coverage and degradation guarantees, compared to premium options.
- Premium panels: built to a higher spec, with fuller warranty coverage, including product, performance, and service (labour). Lower annual degradation rates mean higher long-term energy output. Construction is more robust for demanding climates. A longer lifespan is backed by a manufacturer with a genuine long-term Australian presence.
The right tier for your home depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay in the property, and the conditions your roof faces. For most Perth homeowners investing in a solar and battery system that will run for 25 or more years, the premium tier is worth the extra cost.
What Actually Matters When Comparing Solar Panels
Warranty Coverage, and What the Exclusions Mean
The warranty conversation is where most solar comparisons fall short. When a salesperson says ‘this panel has a 25-year warranty,’ the key question is: what does that warranty actually cover?
There are three parts to a solar panel warranty:
- Product warranty: covers defects in materials and workmanship. If the panel fails due to a manufacturing defect, the manufacturer replaces it. Standard panels typically offer 12-25 years here.
- Performance warranty: guarantees the panel will produce above a minimum output level, for example, 80% of rated power after 25 years. Most reputable panels offer this at 25-30 years.
- Service warranty: covers the labour cost of removing and reinstalling panels under a warranty claim. This is the part most often excluded on budget and mid-tier panels. It is also the part that can cost you thousands of dollars out of pocket when you need it.
Always check whether service (labour) is included. A panel with a 25-year product warranty but no service coverage leaves you exposed to real costs if a panel needs replacing a decade into its life.
Annual Degradation Rate
Every solar panel loses a small amount of generation capacity each year as the cells age. The annual degradation rate tells you how fast this happens. A panel with a 0.40% annual degradation rate will produce around 90% of its original output after 25 years. A panel with a 0.55% rate will produce closer to 85%. Over a 6.6kW or larger system, that difference adds up to a meaningful amount of energy, and bill savings, across the system’s lifetime.
When comparing panels, check the maximum warranted annual degradation rate. Then work out what the output will look like at years 10, 15, and 25. This is a better guide to long-term value than the day-one wattage figure.
Australian Manufacturer Presence
A 30-year warranty is only as good as the company behind it. Solar manufacturers have come and gone from the Australian market. Brands that were widely installed ten years ago no longer have local support, leaving homeowners with panels they cannot get warranty service on.
When choosing panels, ask: does this manufacturer have genuine long-term Australian operations? Do they have local support staff? Have they consistently honoured Australian warranty claims? A manufacturer with deep roots in the Australian market is a very different proposition from one with a local distributor that could change or close.
Salt Mist Corrosion Rating
This is a spec that rarely comes up in solar quotes. But for Perth homeowners, particularly those within a few kilometres of the coast, it is one of the most important factors to consider.
Salt-laden air causes corrosion in solar panel components over time, particularly at junction boxes, frame connections, and cell contacts. Panels without a salt mist corrosion certification may show much faster degradation in coastal environments, cutting both output and lifespan.
The standard test is IEC 61701. Panels can earn this certification at different severity levels. The maximum severity rating means the highest level of corrosion resistance. If your home is in a coastal suburb, this rating should be a requirement, not a nice-to-have. Perth’s coastal strip, from Two Rocks in the north through to Mandurah and beyond, covers a large share of the homes where Positive Energy Solutions installs.
Temperature Coefficient
Solar panels produce less power as they get hotter. This is expressed as the temperature coefficient, a percentage drop in output per degree above 25 degrees Celsius. In Perth, where rooftop temperatures can pass 70 degrees on a summer afternoon, a low temperature coefficient makes a real difference to summer generation.
Panels with a lower, less negative, temperature coefficient hold their output better in the heat. This matters a great deal in WA’s climate.
Build Quality and Cell Technology
How solar cells are joined within a panel affects both efficiency and long-term reliability. Shingled cell designs overlap the cells, rather than sitting them side by side with visible gaps and connecting busbars. This reduces resistive losses, improves shade tolerance, and removes the micro-crack risk that comes from the stress points in conventional busbars.
