GEN24 vs GEN24 Plus: Which One and Why It Matters

Fronius makes two versions of the GEN24 — the standard GEN24 and the GEN24 Plus. The distinction is important and often misunderstood.

The GEN24 is a solar inverter without a battery port. It cannot connect a battery for overnight storage or provide backup power.

The GEN24 Plus adds the battery connection port and backup capability. With a compatible battery and a backup switching device, it provides essentials backup. This applies to the Primo (all single-phase sizes) and the Symo 6–10 kW. The Primo GEN24 Plus 10kW also supports whole-home backup. This covers large loads like air conditioning and heat pumps, during a grid outage, day or night. Positive Energy Solutions does not offer backup with the Symo GEN24 Plus 3–5 kW.

Fronius offers a clear upgrade path. You can convert the GEN24 to GEN24 Plus functionality via the Fronius UP.storage software upgrade. It is available at approximately $900 through the Fronius webshop. This unlocks the battery port and Full Backup capability without replacing the inverter hardware. This makes the GEN24 a practical choice if budget is a constraint at install time, and you plan to add a battery later.

BYD Battery-Box HVM capacity is expandable in 2.76 kWh modules, from 8.3 kWh up to 22.1 kWh per tower. HVS capacity comes in 5.12 kWh modules. All three batteries use LFP chemistry, which carries no thermal runaway risk associated with NMC cells.

BYD Battery-Box HVM — The Primary Pairing

The BYD HVM is the most commonly installed battery with the GEN24 Plus at Positive Energy Solutions. It starts at 8.3 kWh and expands to 66.2 kWh across multiple towers. It is genuinely scalable. It suits a small household adding one module, right through to a large home with significant overnight load or EV charging demand.

The Fronius GEN24 Plus and BYD Battery-Box HVM combination has achieved top rankings in the HTW Berlin Energy Storage Inspection. It has done so for five consecutive years. HTW Berlin’s annual study is considered Europe’s most rigorous independent assessment of residential PV storage system efficiency. Five top rankings in a row is strong independent validation of the pairing’s real-world performance.

BYD Battery-Box HVM uses LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistry. This is the same chemistry used in many utility-scale storage installations. LFP does not carry the thermal runaway risk associated with NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) cells, used in some competing battery products.

Fronius Reserva

The Fronius Reserva is Fronius’s own battery platform, designed specifically to pair with the GEN24 Plus. It is available in 5–15 kWh configurations. It offers a clean single-brand ecosystem. It suits medium-sized Perth households well, where 10–15 kWh of storage covers most evening load without oversizing.

The Reserva also supports Full Backup capability with the GEN24 Plus. This makes it a complete all-Fronius backup solution for households where brand consistency and single-vendor support are priorities.

How the GEN24 Plus Performs Under Perth Conditions

Perth’s solar resource is exceptional, and its tariff structure is distinctive. Synergy’s DEBS feed-in rate of 2c/kWh means exported solar is nearly worthless. The A1 import tariff of 33.26c/kWh makes every unit of solar consumed at home significantly more valuable than grid electricity. The same is true for solar stored for evening use.

The GEN24 Plus is well-suited to this environment for several reasons:

  • DC clipping recovery: Perth’s high irradiance means that on most summer days, a correctly oversized array pushes more DC power through the inverter than it can export on the AC side. Rather than losing that energy as heat (clipping), the GEN24 Plus diverts surplus DC directly into the battery, recovering it for evening use. Backup Power: What the GEN24 Plus Can and Cannot Do

The GEN24 Plus provides two distinct backup modes, and it is important to understand what each one covers.

PV Point — Basic Backup Without a Battery

The PV Point is a dedicated socket on the GEN24 (and GEN24 Plus). During a grid outage, it can supply up to 3kW of power directly from the solar panels, as long as the sun is shining. This is useful for powering essential items like phone chargers, a modem, or lighting during a daytime outage. But it does not power the whole home, and it provides nothing at night.

PV Point is available on both the GEN24 and the GEN24 Plus. It does not require a battery.

Backup With Battery — Essentials and Whole-Home

With a compatible battery (BYD HVM, HVS, or Fronius Reserva) and a backup switching device installed, the GEN24 Plus can disconnect from the grid. It then powers essential circuits, such as lights, fridge, modem, and medical equipment, from battery and solar combined, day or night. Essentials backup is available on all Primo GEN24 Plus models (single-phase, 3–10 kW) and on the Symo GEN24 Plus 6–10 kW.

Whole-home backup, covering large loads including air conditioning, heat pumps, and cooking, is available on the Primo GEN24 Plus 10kW only. If whole-home backup is a requirement, this is the model to specify.

Positive Energy Solutions does not offer backup with the Symo GEN24 Plus 3–5 kW. These three-phase models have limited backup capability. For three-phase homes where backup matters, we recommend the Symo 6–10 kW for essentials backup. If whole-home backup is the brief, we recommend the single-phase Primo 10kW instead.

Essential Circuits: What Gets Backed Up

For all GEN24 Plus configurations other than the Primo 10kW, backup power covers two or three dedicated circuits, rather than the whole home. The number of circuits depends on the inverter size. A smaller inverter supports fewer backed-up circuits. A larger model has more headroom.

Those circuits are typically chosen to cover the loads that keep a home functional during an outage. These are lighting, the fridge, modem and networking, and a selection of power outlets. High-draw loads sit on the main board and are not backed up. These include air conditioning, electric hot water, induction cooktops, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and EV chargers. Keeping them off the essential circuits is what makes the backup practical. The battery sustains the home through an overnight outage, rather than draining within hours.

Every GEN24 Plus installation connects to Fronius Solar.web, Fronius’s cloud-based monitoring platform. Solar.web provides real-time and historical data. This covers solar generation, household consumption, battery state of charge, grid import and export, and system efficiency.

Solar.web is accessible via web browser or the Fronius Solar.web app. It is widely regarded as one of the most detailed and user-friendly monitoring platforms in the residential solar market.

Positive Energy Solutions registers every GEN24 Plus installation on Solar.web at commissioning, using the Solar.start app. This registration activates the 10-year warranty. Without it, the default warranty period is shorter. We handle registration as a standard part of every installation.
