The Three Solar System Types Explained

There is no battery storage. Critically, a grid-tied system shuts down automatically during a blackout as a required safety measure — it cannot feed electricity back to lines while workers may be repairing them. Your solar does nothing during a grid outage, regardless of how much sun is shining.

Grid-tied is the lowest-cost entry point to solar. It has the fastest payback period in isolation. In many states and situations it is the rational first choice. In Perth in 2026, it needs closer scrutiny — which the DEBS section below explains.

Hybrid Solar

A hybrid system keeps the grid connection but adds a battery. During the day your panels charge the battery and power your home. The battery then covers your evening and overnight usage. The grid sits in the background as a top-up when the battery runs low.

A correctly installed hybrid system provides blackout protection. When the grid drops, the hybrid inverter islands your home and runs from the battery. You keep the lights on, the fridge running, and your network connected. Depending on your battery capacity and loads, you may get through the entire outage without noticing it.

Hybrid systems are more expensive upfront than grid-tied. In Perth specifically, the economics of battery storage are stronger than almost anywhere else in Australia because of how poorly the DEBS feed-in tariff pays for exported solar — more on this below.

Off-Grid Solar

An off-grid system has no connection to the Western Power network at all. Your panels, a large battery bank, and typically a diesel or petrol backup generator form a self-contained power station. Every unit of electricity you use must be generated and stored on-site.

Off-grid systems must be sized for your worst-case scenario: the cloudiest, shortest week of the WA winter, with all your normal loads running. The WA Factor: Why DEBS Changes the Calculation

Western Australia has the lowest solar feed-in tariff in Australia. Under Synergy’s Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), you receive:

  • 2.0 cents per kWh for solar exported between 9pm and 3pm (most of the day)
  • 10.0 cents per kWh for solar exported between 3pm and 9pm (peak window)

In practice most households export the bulk of their generation during the middle of the day — well outside the peak window — so the effective rate for most homes is close to 2 cents per kWh.

Compare that to what you pay Synergy for electricity you draw from the grid: approximately 30 to 33 cents per kWh under the standard A1 tariff.

The Real Cost of Exporting Solar in Perth

In most cases, this is not how it works. A standard grid-tied inverter is not a hybrid inverter. Adding a battery to a grid-tied system almost always requires replacing the inverter entirely, not just plugging in a battery. The inverter replacement adds $1,500 to $3,000 to what you thought would be a simple battery upgrade — on top of the battery cost itself.

If you want a battery now or at any point in the next 10 years, the correct approach is to install a hybrid inverter from day one, even if you defer the battery. A genuine hybrid inverter has the battery management circuitry built in. When you add the battery, it connects to an inverter that was designed for it. Nothing needs replacing.

WA Grid Connection Rules from May 2026

From 1 May 2026, updated Western Power connection rules apply to all new solar and battery systems on the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). The export limits that apply to your system depend on inverter size.

Inverters 5 kW and Under: DEBS Pathway

If your inverter is 5 kW or less, you can access the full DEBS pathway — including both the 2 cent off-peak rate and the 10 cent peak rate between 3pm and 9pm. This requires a CSIP-AUS compliant inverter with working Wi-Fi so that Western Power and AEMO can communicate with the system. The inverter must be capable of receiving dynamic export signals and, in genuine grid emergencies, temporary disconnection — a provision reserved for rare grid stability events, not routine operation.

Inverters Above 5 kW: 1.5 kW Export Limit

Inverters above 5 kW are subject to a 1.5 kW export limit — a Western Power requirement that applies regardless of whether you participate in a virtual power plant. The same 1.5 kW limit also applies to Tier 0 customers and any customer who opts out of VPP participation, regardless of inverter size.

For a large solar system, a 1.5 kW export cap means a significant portion of your surplus generation cannot reach the grid during peak production hours. This makes battery storage even more valuable for larger systems — energy you cannot export can instead be stored and used at night, capturing the full avoided-cost benefit at the grid tariff rate rather than earning 2 cents per kWh at the fence.

Participating in a VPP such as Synergy’s Battery Rewards program can provide additional income from your battery. The 1.5 kW export cap remains the standing Western Power grid requirement — however, during VPP activation events, Synergy can adjust the export limit as part of the grid service. Outside of those activation events, the 1.5 kW cap applies. Three-Phase Homes: Additional Considerations

If your property has three-phase power supply — common in larger homes, farms, and commercial properties in WA — the grid-tied vs hybrid vs off-grid question has some additional dimensions.

A three-phase grid-tied system requires a three-phase grid-connect inverter, which limits your size options. Three-phase hybrid systems are available. The Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus (6-10 kW) provides essentials backup on three-phase, while the Fronius Verto Plus (15-33.3 kW) provides full whole-home backup on three-phase, which the Symo GEN24 Plus cannot do.

Three-phase inverters are above the 5 kW threshold, so the 1.5 kW export limit applies to all three-phase systems. Battery storage is particularly well-suited to three-phase installations for this reason — energy that cannot be exported can be stored and used on-site at full value.
