Heat Pump Hot Water
A heat pump has similar technology to your air conditioning system using a compressor and refrigerant. First it absorbs heat from the surrounding air to heat the refrigerant. Secondly the compressor pressurises the refrigerant causing it to heat up further. Lastly this hot refrigerant passes through a heat exchanger to heat the water in a tank.
Heat pumps are the most efficient way of heating water and are subject to STCs or renewable energy credits providing an upfront discount.
A heat pump uses 65% less energy than a traditional hot water system and, when paired with a solar and battery system, can cut the costs entirely.
Solar Hot Water
Solar hot water is more recognisable having been around for many years with the first systems installed in the 1950s. They simply use the suns energy to heat the water through a few simple solar panels and store this in a tank. For the majority of the year in Perth they produce free hot water. However in the winter months they need a gas or electric booster to operate.
Overall both options are great, but heat pumps are more cost efficient when paired with a solar and battery system.
