If you have researched premium solar panels for a Perth home, you have likely seen two names come up again and again. SunPower P-Series and REC Alpha sit at the top of almost every shortlist. They are also genuinely different products. They use different cell technologies, different build approaches, different warranty structures, and come from very different company backgrounds. 1. The Two Companies: Who Is Actually Behind the Panel?
REC: Norwegian brand, Chinese chapter, Indian ownership — and a complicated recent history
REC was founded in Norway in 1996 as Renewable Energy Corporation. It first focused on silicon and wafer production for the solar industry. The Norwegian heritage carried clean energy credibility and Scandinavian engineering rigour. This became central to how the brand marketed itself around the world. ‘Solar’s Most Trusted’ is still the tagline REC uses today.
But REC has not been Norwegian-owned for over a decade. In 2015, Chinese company Bluestar Elkem Investment bought REC Solar. Bluestar Elkem is itself a subsidiary of China National Bluestar, a ChemChina joint venture backed by Blackstone. The Norwegian Elkem name gave useful cover for what was, in substance, a Chinese acquisition.
In October 2021, Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries bought REC Solar Holdings from China National Bluestar for USD 771 million. Reliance is one of India’s largest companies, with interests across petrochemicals, telecommunications, and retail. It bought REC as part of a stated strategy to build a major position in global clean energy. The purchase included REC’s manufacturing operations and intellectual property.
Then in January 2024, Reliance sold REC Solar Norway AS, the Norwegian polysilicon manufacturing subsidiary, back to Elkem ASA for USD 22 million. This sale covered only the Norwegian manufacturing assets. Reliance kept the REC brand, the Singapore panel manufacturing operations, and the technology IP. REC’s Alpha Pure panels continue to be made in Singapore. Reliance is also building a new HJT solar gigafactory in Jamnagar, Gujarat, where future manufacturing volume is expected to shift.
None of this makes REC Alpha a worse panel. The Singapore manufacturing facility is well-regarded. The Alpha Pure range is a genuine premium product. But homeowners comparing REC to other premium brands deserve to understand the company’s actual ownership and manufacturing history. A 25-year warranty is only as good as the company that stands behind it.
SunPower and TCL: understanding what the brand is today
The SunPower name has a long history in high-performance solar. SunPower Corporation was a US-listed company with decades of IP development in premium solar cells. The Maxeon back-contact cell technology and shingled-cell P-Series design both came out of SunPower’s research programme.
In 2020, SunPower Corp spun off its panel manufacturing into a separate company, Maxeon Solar Technologies. Maxeon was listed on Nasdaq and headquartered in Singapore. TCL Zhonghuan Renewable Energy Technology (TCL TZE), a subsidiary of Chinese manufacturer TCL Group, became the majority shareholder of Maxeon at that point. So the technology lineage is genuinely American. But the manufacturing entity was already Chinese-majority-owned from 2020.
SunPower Corporation, the original US company, was never a panel manufacturer. After the Maxeon spinoff in 2020, SunPower Corp became purely a US solar installation and sales business. It bought Maxeon-made panels and sold systems to American homeowners under the SunPower brand. It had no manufacturing capability of its own. That business filed for bankruptcy in August 2024. Its US installation assets were bought by Complete Solar. Complete Solar rebranded itself as SunPower in the US market in 2025. This rebranded entity has no link to Maxeon and no panel manufacturing. It also has no connection to the SunPower panels sold outside the United States, including in Australia.
In early 2025, Maxeon sold its non-US sales operations and the SunPower trademark outside the United States to TCL Group for USD 35.69 million. TCL then launched TCL SunPower Global as a dedicated business unit in March 2025. The P-Series panels sold in Australia are TCL SunPower Global products. They are made through TCL’s production infrastructure. They are backed by Maxeon’s cell technology IP, and carry the SunPower brand under TCL ownership.
The technology heritage in the P-Series is real. The shingled-cell TOPCon design, glass-glass construction, and 30-year warranty structure were all developed during the Maxeon era and are carried forward. But the company behind the panels sold in Australia today is TCL. TCL is one of China’s largest technology and electronics manufacturers, with global revenues that dwarf any standalone solar company.
For a 30-year warranty, the financial stability of the entity standing behind it matters more than the brand name on the tin. TCL’s global scale, spread of revenue, and manufacturing depth give a different kind of long-term backing than a solar-specialist company can offer. The solar sector has shown real ups and downs in recent years. This context matters when weighing up a 30-year product, performance, and service warranty.
In Australia, TCL SunPower Global works through a direct installer partnership model. Installers like Positive Energy Solutions work directly with SunPower. 2. The Two Technologies: What You Are Actually Buying
REC Alpha Pure: HJT technology
The REC Alpha Pure range uses Heterojunction Technology (HJT) cells. HJT combines a crystalline silicon core with amorphous silicon layers on each face. This design gives high efficiency, a low temperature coefficient (meaning it loses less output on hot days), and good resistance to potential-induced degradation. The current flagship, the Alpha Pure-RX, reaches up to 22.6 percent efficiency and is rated 450 to 470 Wp.
REC Alpha panels use a polymer backsheet on the rear surface. This is the same rear-surface build found on most conventional panels, though with better cell technology behind it.
SunPower P-Series: TOPCon shingled-cell glass-glass
The SunPower Performance 7 uses N-type TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) technology in a one-third-cut, shingled-cell design. Cells are cut into strips and overlapped in a shingled arrangement, rather than connected by exposed metal busbars. This removes a common stress point and gives the panel its all-black, grid-line-free look. The Performance 7 is rated 440 to 460 W, with up to 22.7 percent efficiency (460 W variant). It is also bifacial, meaning it generates power from both the front and rear surface. Bifacial gains range from 5 to 20 percent, depending on installation, mounting height, and roof albedo.
The Performance 7 uses a glass-glass build. It has 2.0 mm heat-strengthened glass on both the front and rear surface, with an anti-reflective coating on the front. This is a meaningfully different approach to the polymer backsheet used on most conventional panels. What this means for long-term performance in Perth’s environment is covered in detail below.

3. Performance Specifications Compared
Efficiency
SunPower Performance 7: up to 22.7 percent efficiency (460 W variant). REC Alpha Pure-RX: up to 22.6 percent efficiency. On a direct comparison, the two panels are essentially neck and neck on peak efficiency. The 0.1 percentage point difference is within the margin of measurement tolerance, so it has no real-world significance.
What this means is that efficiency is not a deciding factor between these two panels. Both produce very similar power per square metre. The real differences lie elsewhere: in construction, warranty structure, and long-term durability.
Temperature coefficient
Both panels perform well in heat. Both use cell technologies built specifically to reduce thermal losses. REC Alpha’s HJT design reaches a temperature coefficient of approximately -0.24 percent per degree Celsius. SunPower Performance 7 sits at -0.29 percent per degree Celsius.
REC Alpha has a clear advantage here. In a Perth summer, roof temperatures can go above 60 degrees Celsius. The difference between -0.24 and -0.29 percent per degree adds up. A 65-degree roof is typical on a hot Perth day. At that temperature, REC Alpha will produce approximately 2 to 3 percent more power than the Performance 7. Across a full summer, this is a genuine output difference, but it is one factor among several.
Degradation rate
This is the most important spec for a long-term investment. It is also where the comparison needs careful reading.
REC Alpha Pure: warranted maximum annual degradation of 0.25 percent per year, with a guaranteed minimum output of 92 percent of nameplate power at year 25.
SunPower P-Series: warranted maximum annual degradation of 0.40 percent per year, with a guaranteed minimum output of 89.4 percent at year 25 and 87.4 percent at year 30.
On degradation rate and year-25 guaranteed output, REC Alpha has the stronger spec. If you are comparing the two panels purely on paper performance at year 25, REC Alpha is the better number.
The key context is that the SunPower warranty runs to year 30. A homeowner comparing ‘89.4 percent guaranteed at year 25′ (SunPower) against ’92 percent guaranteed at year 25’ (REC Alpha) is really comparing two different systems. Five years later, SunPower still guarantees 87.4 percent output. The REC Alpha warranty has run out by then. Whether you are likely to still be in the home at year 30 is a fair question to ask.
4. Build Quality: Where the Real Difference Lives
The efficiency numbers and degradation rates get most of the attention in panel comparisons. But for a 30-year installation in Perth’s environment, build quality is the factor that decides whether a panel actually delivers those warranted numbers. It also decides whether the panel develops problems that no spec sheet predicted.
Glass-glass versus glass-backsheet construction
SunPower P-Series uses glass-glass construction: a layer of tempered glass on both the front and the rear of the panel. REC Alpha uses a polymer backsheet on the rear.
This difference matters in Perth specifically. A polymer backsheet is a laminated plastic film. Perth has some of the highest UV intensity in the world. Over many years of exposure, polymer backsheets can yellow, micro-crack, and peel away from the panel. Once a backsheet begins to fail, moisture gets in. Moisture inside a panel leads to cell corrosion, browning, and output losses that cannot be fixed by cleaning or maintenance.
Tempered glass rear surfaces do not yellow, do not crack under UV exposure, and do not let moisture in the same way. Shingled cells: no exposed busbars
SunPower P-Series uses a shingled-cell design in which cells overlap rather than connect through exposed metal busbars. In a conventional multi-busbar panel, including REC Alpha, the cells are wired together by thin metal ribbons running across the face of the panel. These ribbons are a common site for micro-cracking under mechanical stress and heat expansion.
Perth’s summers expose panels to repeated cycles of extreme heat and fast overnight cooling. This thermal cycling causes materials to expand and contract. Over years, the repeated mechanical stress on busbar connections creates micro-cracks. These cracks are invisible to the eye but present in the cell structure, causing resistance to rise and output to drop. Removing exposed busbars removes this failure mode.
Shingled-cell construction also cuts hotspot risk. When a cell is partly shaded, by a bird dropping, leaf, or dust build-up, the blocked cell forces its string to compensate. This generates heat at the obstruction point. In conventional busbar panels, this heat gathers at the busbar junction. In shingled-cell panels, the stress spreads more evenly across the overlap. This greatly reduces hotspot intensity and the risk of lasting cell damage.
For Perth homes with any bird activity or dust exposure, the hotspot resilience of the P-Series shingled-cell design is directly relevant.
Mechanical loading
SunPower Performance 7 is rated to withstand wind loads of 4,000 Pa on both front and rear surfaces. It is also rated to snow loads of 6,000 Pa on the front. Impact resistance is rated to 40 mm hail at 27.5 m/s. For Perth Hills and semi-rural properties that experience high-wind events or hail, these ratings are relevant context for panel selection.
5. The Labour Warranty: Why This Is the Most Important Thing Most Homeowners Miss
Panel comparisons almost always focus on efficiency and degradation. They rarely focus on what happens when something goes wrong. This is where the SunPower warranty creates a genuinely important difference.
When a panel fails or underperforms inside its warranty period, there are two separate questions. Who replaces the panel? And who pays for the labour to remove the old panel, install the new one, and reconnect the system? For most panel warranties, the manufacturer answers the first question. The homeowner answers the second.
Solar installation labour is not cheap. Depending on the system, a warranty-related service call involving panel replacement can cost $800 to $2,500 in labour alone. This covers scaffolding, electrical disconnection and reconnection, safe roof access, and the installer’s time. A warranty that covers the panel but not the labour to swap it is a much weaker warranty than one that covers both.
SunPower: 30-year product, performance, and service warranty
SunPower’s warranty covers product (the physical panel), performance (output to the warranted level), and service, including labour, for a full 30 years. This is a single combined warranty, not three separate claims processes. Say a Performance 7 panel installed by Positive Energy Solutions develops a product fault in year 12. The warranty covers both the replacement panel and the labour to replace it.
One practical note: the 30-year warranty needs registration at the time of installation. If not registered, the default is a 25-year warranty. REC Alpha: the ProTrust complication
REC offers a 25-year product and performance warranty as standard. The labour part, which REC calls ProTrust, is only available when panels are installed by an REC Certified Solar Professional (RCSP). REC has around 518 RCSP-certified installers across Australia, a Melbourne office, and panel supply through wholesale distributors including Solar Juice and Sol Distribution. The certification and supply network is real and active.
But there is a structural issue with conditional labour warranty cover worth understanding. The installer who installed your panels might lose their REC certification. This could happen if they change product focus, downsize, or close. If that happens, the ProTrust part of the warranty becomes hard to claim. The labour cover is tied to the installer’s certification status at the time of a claim, not at the time of installation.
