WA Solar Battery Rebate
WA’s Labor government have announced a solar battery rebate if they win the 2025 state election.
What we know so far:
- WA Labor will implement a battery rebate of up to $5,000 for Synergy customers
- There are only 20,000 battery rebates available
- The battery rebate scheme is set to begin on July 1st
- The rebate amount will be determined by battery size
- A no-interest loan program of up to $10,000, available to help cover upfront battery costs, repayable over 10 years. The loan program will be means-tested.
- Eligible batteries must meet Australian and WA grid standards
- The initiative aims to more than double the number of home battery installations in WA, helping families save up to $1,500 annually on power bills
- Solar must be installed in advanced before the solar battery
- Solar system must have a minimum of a 5kW inverter
- Battery size must be 10kWh or larger to receive the full $5000 rebate
- Battery rebate will apply to new solar batteries and not for battery extensions
Do you have an existing solar system?
With over 40% of WA residential properties having already installed solar, it is important to ensure your existing system is set up correctly. If you do not yet have solar installed you can skip to the next section. If you have solar installed the following considerations are needed.
Is my solar system working correctly?
Do you know your solar system is working correctly? Can you still read the screen or have access to your monitoring app? If you are unsure we can complete a solar system health check either by desktop or on site with a fully accredited CEC installer.
Is My solar panel system large enough?
WA will be one of the last states to implement a battery rebate scheme. What we know from other states is a minimum of a 5kW inverter is needed. If you have an older and smaller system it may be time to upgrade to make sure you are eligible.
If the minimum battery size is 10kWh you will need a large enough solar system to charge a battery. So if you are not exporting a minimum 600kWh per billing cycle it is likely you will need to increase the size of your solar system.
We are happy to help you work out if your solar system is large enough. Please enquire today and attach your last 6 Synergy bills for review.
Do you have a hybrid inverter?
Positive Energy install both AC coupled and DC coupled inverters. But most modern batteries are DC coupled and require a hybrid inverter. If you do not have a DC coupled inverter we can install the German made Sonnen battery. However if you want a battery that is modular and has greater backup capacity it may be time to upgrade your inverter to be battery ready now.
Do I need to install solar before the battery rebate?
Based on other state’s rebate schemes, the most likely answer is yes. You should consider it now so you are not competing with battery installs from July onwards.
Based on the other schemes in Australia, a solar system had to be installed in advance. If you do not have solar installed yet please enquire below and attach your last 6 Synergy bills and photo of your switchboard.
If you do decide to wait until July be prepared for a long wait to have your solar installed. Our installers will be fully booked installing solar batteries to existing customers and customers who made sure they were battery ready.
Enquire below so we can get the ball rolling for you.
What battery options are available?
Positive Energy focus on the mid to premium side of the market. We encourage customers to be cautious of cheaper unknown brands that will be installed on your most valuable asset, your family home. We also encourage customers to support local, there are plenty of great WA based solar companies, but we are anticipating a surge of Eastern states companies to rush in to take the money and leave again.
Types of solar batteries?
There are two main types of solar batteries, AC and DC coupled.
AC coupled batteries retrofit to any existing solar system. Common examples are Tesla Powerwall 2 and Sonnen EVO. These are great batteries for someone that knows exactly what size they need now, but have limited ability to expand in the future and reduced backup capacity on 3PH properties.
DC coupled batteries are the most popular options in WA. The leading examples are Sungrow, BYD and iStore. DC coupled batteries can be expanded at any time to meet your needs as electricity demands grow. They also have greater backup capacity on 3PH properties, Sungrow in some instances can backup your whole house.
