3. Degradation: What 0.40% Per Year Actually Means

Every solar panel loses output over time. The rate at which this happens is the single most important long-term performance number. It matters more than the day-one efficiency figure that dominates most spec sheet comparisons.

Why degradation matters more than peak efficiency

A panel rated at 22% efficiency that degrades at 0.55% per year will outperform a panel rated at 21% efficiency that degrades at 0.40% per year. But this only holds true for the first few years. By year 10, the relationship has flipped. By year 20, the gap is large. For a system expected to run for 25 to 30 years, the degradation rate is the number to focus on.

The SunPower P-Series degradation profile

The P-Series guarantees a maximum degradation rate of 0.40% per year after year one. The performance warranty sets a floor of 89.4% of rated output at year 25, and 87.4% at year 30.

On a 6.6kW system in Perth, the year 25 output floor on SunPower panels is approximately 5.9kW of rated capacity. A mid-tier panel at its standard 80% floor sits at 5.28kW, a difference of 0.62kW. Across an average Perth year of roughly 4.5 peak sun hours per day, this adds up to more than 1,000 kWh of extra generation per year by the mid-to-late system life.

  • Performance warranty (30 years): guarantees the output minimums above. If your panels fall below 89.4% at year 25 or 87.4% at year 30, SunPower’s warranty obligation is triggered. Most panel brands offer 25 years on performance. SunPower extends this to 30.
  • Service warranty for labour (30 years): this is the part that most panel brands leave out. If a panel needs to be replaced under warranty, someone has to get on the roof, remove the faulty panel, fit the replacement, and re-commission the system. That labour cost is often several hundred dollars per panel. SunPower’s warranty covers it for 30 years. With Jinko, Trina, and most other brands, that cost falls on the homeowner even when the panel itself is replaced at no cost.

The labour warranty is the part of SunPower’s cover that homeowners most often discover only when they need it. It is the difference between a warranty claim that costs you nothing and one that costs you $500 in labour, on top of the hassle.

Authorised installer requirement

5. Built for Perth Conditions

UV resistance

Omnidian monitors continuously, not now and then.
