In a single-phase home, a single inverter manages all the power coming in and going out. In a three-phase home, your electricity supply is split across three separate phases. Ideally, the load across those three phases should be roughly balanced.
This creates a specific challenge for solar battery systems. If you install a single-phase inverter on a three-phase home, all of the solar generation and battery output sits on one phase only. The other two phases still draw from the grid independently. That imbalance has real consequences, both for how well the system performs and for regulatory compliance.
A single-phase inverter on a three-phase home creates a phase imbalance. Under Western Power network rules, this is outside regulations and cannot be approved by a compliant installer.
Western Power Phase Balancing Rules
Western Power, which manages the electricity network in the Perth metropolitan area and much of regional WA, has specific requirements around phase balance for grid-connected solar and battery systems.
Installing a solar battery system on a three-phase home requires either a true three-phase inverter, or a specific approved configuration of single-phase inverters that distributes generation evenly across all three phases. Backup Power on Three-Phase Homes — The Key Challenge
Backup power on a three-phase home is more complex than on a single-phase home, and inverter size is the critical variable.
In backup mode, the inverter supplies power independently from the grid. On a three-phase system, that output is split across three phases. A 5kW three-phase inverter, for example, supplies roughly 1.66kW per phase in backup mode. That is not enough to run the typical loads on each phase without the system tripping. In practice, a 5kW three-phase inverter is not suitable for backup on a standard Perth home.
The minimum inverter size for meaningful backup coverage on a three-phase home is 10kW, which provides sufficient capacity across each phase to run essential circuits. For whole home backup, a 15kW inverter is required with most brands.
Backup on a three-phase home starts at 10kW. A 5kW three-phase inverter will not deliver reliable backup power and is not recommended for that purpose.

Fronius GEN24 PLUS
The Fronius GEN24 PLUS is available in 5kW, 8kW, and 10kW three-phase configurations. For backup power, the 10kW is the recommended minimum, providing coverage for essential circuits on each phase. The 5kW three-phase is not recommended for backup due to the per-phase output limitation.
Compatible batteries are the Fronius Reserva and BYD Battery-Box HVM. The inverter determines backup capability, not the battery.
For high-draw properties, larger homes, or rural installations with significant power requirements, Fronius also offers the Verto Plus at 30kW, which can deliver whole home backup for demanding three-phase properties.
Note: existing Fronius GEN24 inverters (not PLUS) require a software upgrade to PLUS for battery compatibility. If you have an existing Fronius inverter, send a photo of the sticker on the side of the unit to your Positive Energy Solutions energy consultant to confirm compatibility before proceeding.
Sungrow SHRT
The Sungrow SHRT is Sungrow’s three-phase hybrid inverter range. It is available in 5kW, 10kW, and 15kW configurations.
The 5kW SHRT is not suitable for backup (1.66kW per phase is insufficient and causes the system to trip). The 10kW provides backup to essential circuits on each phase. The 15kW SHRT is capable of whole home backup on a three-phase property, making it a strong option for larger Perth homes that want comprehensive outage coverage.
Sungrow batteries pair directly with the SHRT inverter. Monitoring is via the iSolarCloud app.
SigEnergy SigenStor
SigEnergy’s three-phase configuration follows the same pattern as Sungrow. The 5kW is not recommended for backup, the 10kW covers essential circuits on each phase, and the 15kW delivers whole home backup capability.

- Three Powerwall 3 units installed one per phase, providing essential circuit backup across all three phases
Neither configuration delivers whole home backup on a three-phase property. The single-unit option limits backup to one phase, and the three-unit option significantly increases cost. For most three-phase Perth homes, a purpose-built three-phase inverter from Fronius, Sungrow, or SigEnergy is a better fit.

Sizing a Battery for a Three-Phase Home
