Installation Day Is Just the Beginning
For most Perth homeowners, the focus before a solar installation is choosing the right system and the right company. But once the crew leaves and the panels are on the roof, a new set of questions starts. When will I start saving? When does the export payment begin? Is it working properly? Who do I call if something looks off? This guide covers exactly what happens after solar is installed.
This guide walks through everything that happens after installation day: the Western Power grid connection process, your first monitoring app check-in, DEBS export payments, the Battery Rewards VPP if you are enrolled, and how Omnidian’s ongoing support works.
Installation Day: What to Expect
Our accredited installers install your system and sign it off to Positive Energy’s completion standards. A standard residential solar installation takes one to two days, depending on system size and how complex the switchboard work is. Here is what happens on the day:
Before work begins: your power is disconnected for part of the day while the installer makes the inverter and switchboard connections. You will be told in advance how long this is expected to take.
On the roof: mounting rails are fixed to the roof, panels are installed and secured, and DC cabling is run from the array down to the inverter location.
At the inverter and switchboard: the inverter is mounted and wired. Connections are made to the switchboard, isolators are fitted, and the system is tested before power is restored.
Commissioning: the installer configures the inverter with the correct settings for Western Power’s network requirements. This includes the CSIP-AUS smart inverter settings that came into effect from May 2026. The monitoring platform is connected and tested.
Handover: before the team leaves, they walk you through the monitoring app. They show you how to read your generation and consumption data, and give you contact details for after-sales support.
From this point, your system is generating — but there are a few more steps before everything is fully operational.
The Western Power Grid Connection Process
Before installation, your installer submits a network application to Western Power. This covers the technical design of the system and confirms it meets grid connection rules. For most residential systems, approval is granted as part of the design process.
After installation, the installer lodges the completion paperwork with Western Power. This includes inverter commissioning confirmation and compliance certificates. Western Power then processes the connection and tells Synergy to arrange the meter upgrade.
This process typically takes 5 to 10 business days from installation completion. You do not need to do anything. Every installer Positive Energy Solutions works with manages the paperwork as part of the installation process.
Note: From May 2026, all new residential solar installations in the SWIS must comply with CSIP-AUS smart inverter requirements. Positive Energy Solutions installations are commissioned with these settings configured as standard.
Your Synergy Meter Upgrade
Most Perth homes have a standard consumption meter. Once your solar system is connected to the grid, Synergy needs to upgrade this to a bi-directional meter. This type of meter measures both the electricity you draw from the grid and the electricity you export to it.
Synergy schedules this upgrade after getting notice from Western Power. In most cases, it happens within a few weeks of installation, though timing can vary. The upgrade is done remotely, or with a brief visit by a meter technician. You do not need to be home.
Until the bi-directional meter is in place, your system still generates and offsets your consumption. Exported energy is not recorded, and DEBS credits do not build up yet. This is normal and temporary.
When Do DEBS Export Payments Start?
The Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS) pays eligible Perth homeowners for electricity exported to the Synergy grid — 10 cents per kWh during peak hours (3pm to 9pm) and 2 cents per kWh at other times.
DEBS payments start once your bi-directional meter is active and your Synergy account shows your solar system. From that point, exported energy appears on your bill as a credit against your consumption charges.
DEBS eligibility: inverter size matters
DEBS is only available to systems with an inverter capacity of 5kW or under. If your system has a larger inverter, common with three-phase installations or larger hybrid systems, you are not eligible for DEBS export payments. Your system still exports energy to the grid, but you do not get paid for it. In this case, maximising self-consumption and battery storage becomes the main way to capture the value of your solar generation.
In the gap period before your meter is upgraded, the best strategy is to maximise self-consumption. Run high-draw appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and pool pumps during peak generation hours (roughly 9am to 3pm). This helps you use as much of your solar output directly as possible.
Battery Rewards VPP: What to Expect If You are Enrolled
If you received the WA Residential Battery Scheme rebate ($1,300), your battery was enrolled in the Synergy Sustainable Living (SSL) program as part of the installation process. SSL enrolment means your battery automatically takes part in the Synergy Battery Rewards Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
Here is what that means in practice:
- Dispatch events: Synergy can call on your battery to export energy to the grid during high-demand periods. These are called dispatch events. You will receive 70 cents per kWh for energy exported during these events.
- Up to 30 events per year: Synergy can call up to 30 events per year, typically during summer afternoons and evenings. The typical annual payment is $130 to $350, depending on your battery size and how many events occur.
- Fully automated: you do not need to do anything during a dispatch event. Your battery management system and the VPP platform handle the charging and discharging automatically.
- Visible in your monitoring app: dispatch events show up in your monitoring data as export spikes. Tesla app users will see Storm Watch and VPP activity clearly labelled. SigEnergy and Sungrow users can see the event in their portal’s export history.
- Battery will recharge after events: the system is designed to restore battery charge after a dispatch event. This keeps your evening self-consumption unaffected. How quickly it recharges depends on available solar generation and the time of day.

Your Monitoring App: What to Look At and What is Normal
Your monitoring app is the main tool for understanding how your system is performing. Every brand Positive Energy Solutions works with has its own app or portal. Here is a quick guide to each:

What is normal in the first 30 days:
- Generation varies day to day: cloud cover, temperature, and time of year all affect output. Perth’s irradiance is high but not constant — some variation is expected and normal.
- Export and consumption balance shifts: as you adjust habits to use more power during generation hours, your self-consumption rate typically improves over the first few weeks.
- Battery takes a few cycles to calibrate: battery management systems typically refine their state-of-charge estimates over the first 10 to 20 charge/discharge cycles. Minor fluctuations in reported percentage are normal early on.
- Monitoring connectivity: if your inverter loses connection to the monitoring platform (usually a wi-fi issue), generation data may show a gap. The system is still working — reconnecting to wi-fi restores the data feed.
Omnidian: Your Ongoing After-Sales Support
All Positive Energy Solutions installations are supported through Omnidian, a dedicated after-sales service. It monitors your system’s performance on an ongoing basis, not just in the first few months.
Here is how Omnidian works:
- Proactive monitoring: Omnidian monitors your system’s output data continuously. If performance drops below expected levels for your location and system size, an alert is generated automatically. You do not need to notice it yourself.
- Fault identification: when an alert triggers, Omnidian investigates whether it is a connectivity issue (most common), an inverter fault, a panel issue, or something else. Minor issues are often resolved remotely.
- Single point of contact: if a technician visit is needed, Omnidian coordinates it. This includes liaising with the equipment manufacturer if the issue falls under a product warranty claim. You do not need to manage that process yourself.
- Long-term performance tracking: Omnidian gives you visibility over how your system performs month to month and year to year. This makes it easier to identify any gradual change that falls outside normal parameters.

What If Something Does Not Seem Right?
In the first weeks after installation, it is common to have questions about whether the system is performing as expected. Here is a quick guide:

How long does it take from installation to being fully connected to the grid in Perth?
The typical timeline from installation completion to full grid connection and DEBS activation is two to four weeks. The main variables are Western Power’s processing time (5-10 business days) and Synergy’s meter upgrade scheduling. Your installer handles the paperwork. You do not need to follow up with Western Power or Synergy yourself.
Can I use my solar system before the meter is upgraded?

What is CSIP-AUS and does it affect my system?

My battery was enrolled in the SSL program, what does that mean for my day-to-day usage?
SSL (Synergy Sustainable Living) enrolment means your battery takes part in the Battery Rewards VPP. In practice, this has little impact on day-to-day usage. Dispatch events are automated. They typically last 30 to 60 minutes and are scheduled during times when the grid needs support, usually summer afternoons. Your system recharges after each event. The 70c/kWh payment for dispatched energy is credited to your Synergy account.
How do I know if my system is performing well?
A useful benchmark: a north-facing 6.6kW system in Perth typically generates 26 to 30 kWh on a clear summer day and 18 to 22 kWh on a clear winter day. Your monitoring app shows daily totals. Compare these to the expected output from the generation estimate in your original quote. If underperformance shows up consistently over a week or more with no clear cause, such as weather or shading, contact Positive Energy Solutions.
