For a long time, the Tesla Powerwall 2 and the newer Powerwall 3 stayed apart. A household with a Powerwall 2 that wanted more storage faced a hard choice. It could add a whole separate system. Or it could replace the battery it already had. That has now changed. Australia is the first country in the world to benefit.

In July 2026, a Tesla software update let the Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 work as one system. It runs as a single, combined home battery system. This guide explains what the update does. It covers why this matters for Perth homes with an existing Powerwall 2, and what you can combine. It also covers one important catch for three-phase properties.

What Actually Changed

Tesla announced this in March 2026. It rolled the update out through an over-the-air firmware update in July 2026. The change is pure software. An existing Powerwall 2 stays as it is, and a home still on Tesla’s older Gateway 1 has it changed over to a Backup Gateway 2. The update simply teaches the units to work together. A Powerwall 2, a Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3 Expansion units can then run as one system. It works under a single app.

Australia was chosen as the first country in the world to get the rollout. This shows how large the Australian Powerwall base is. It also shows how many households here can benefit. For a Powerwall 2 owner, the change turns a closed system into one that can grow.

Why This Matters for Existing Powerwall 2 Owners

Perth has a very large installed base of Powerwall 2 systems from the past several years. Until now, those owners were locked in. The Powerwall 2 could not talk to a Powerwall 3, so growing a system meant a parallel, separate installation. Or it meant scrapping a perfectly good battery. Neither was appealing.

With the update, a household can keep its Powerwall 2 doing what it already does. It can also add a Powerwall 3, and Powerwall 3 Expansion units, on top. The result is more usable storage and stronger backup. It is managed as one system in one app, and it keeps the original investment. As homes add electric vehicles, more air conditioning and other loads, this clean upgrade path is genuinely valuable.

What You Can Combine

The combined system supports a defined maximum configuration for each site. The table below sets out the parts and their roles.

Component Max per site Role in the combined system
Powerwall 2 Up to 4 Existing AC-coupled storage, retained and kept working
Powerwall 3 1 The hybrid inverter and battery that runs the combined system
Powerwall 3 Expansion Up to 3 Extra battery capacity added to the Powerwall 3

In other words, a home can grow to a large total capacity. It keeps its original Powerwall 2 units in the mix. Everything is coordinated by the Powerwall 3 and monitored through the Tesla app.

The Three-Phase Catch

There is one important limit to be honest about. It matters in Perth, because many homes here have a three-phase supply. In a combined system on a three-phase grid connection, the Powerwall 3’s output is capped at 5 kilowatts. Its full continuous output is 10 kW. On a single-phase connection, the full output is available.

For a single-phase home, combining a Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 is simple. It delivers the full benefit. For a three-phase home, it is still useful. The output cap is worth weighing at the design stage. It is one reason Tesla’s upcoming three-phase Powerwall may suit some three-phase homes better. A proper system design is the right way to choose the best path for a home.

Why It Suits the Perth Market

This update suits Western Australia well. The state has a high number of established Powerwall 2 systems. Feed-in rates here are low, and export limits apply. Both reward storing and using more energy at home, rather than exporting it. Being able to expand an existing battery, rather than replace it, makes sense as households use more electricity.

How Positive Energy Solutions Can Help

Positive Energy Solutions is a Tesla Certified Installer. The team can assess an existing Powerwall 2 system. It confirms the right combination of Powerwall 3 and Expansion units for the home. The team also handles the design and installation properly, including the three-phase points above. Every installation is completed by our accredited installers and signed off to Positive Energy’s completion standards. It is backed by a 10-year installation workmanship warranty and Positive Energy Protection, powered by Omnidian. The combined system is monitored for performance from day one.

As with any battery decision, the best answer depends on the home. Positive Energy Solutions also installs SigEnergy SigenStor, Sungrow SBH, Fronius Reserva, BYD Battery-Box Premium HVM and iStore. The team matches the choice to the household.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a Powerwall 3 to my existing Powerwall 2?

Yes. Following a Tesla update in July 2026, a Powerwall 2 and a Powerwall 3, along with Powerwall 3 Expansion units, can work together. They form one combined system. Australia was the first country to get this.

Do I need to replace or modify my Powerwall 2?

No. The compatibility comes entirely from an over-the-air firmware update. It makes no physical changes to an existing Powerwall 2 unit. The battery you already own keeps working as part of the larger system.

How many Powerwalls can I combine?

A combined system supports up to four Powerwall 2 units. It also supports one Powerwall 3, and up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units per site. The Powerwall 3 coordinates everything, and it is managed in the Tesla app.

Does this work on a three-phase home?

It does, with one current limit. On a three-phase connection, a combined system caps the Powerwall 3’s output. The cap is around 5 kilowatts, well under its full output. Single-phase homes are not affected. Three-phase homes should factor this into the design.

Is it available in Australia?

Yes. Australia was chosen as the first country in the world to get the update. It began rolling out in July 2026.

Thinking About Expanding Your Powerwall?

If a Powerwall 2 is already on the wall, this update gives it a new role. It becomes the foundation of a larger system, not a dead end. The right expansion depends on the home, the phase connection, and how much extra storage and backup a household wants.
