Heat pump or solar hot water?
There are two main ways to heat water with renewable energy at home. Both earn the federal STC discount.
Solar hot water (solar thermal)
A solar hot water system heats water with collectors on the roof. The sun warms the collectors, and the heat moves into a storage tank, on the roof or on the ground. Solar hot water has been around for many years, with the first systems installed in the 1950s. For most of the year in Perth it heats water from the sun alone. In the winter months a gas or electric booster tops the water up.
Heat pump hot water
A heat pump uses the same technology as your air conditioner: a compressor and a refrigerant. First it absorbs heat from the surrounding air to warm the refrigerant. Then the compressor squeezes the refrigerant, which makes it hotter still. Finally, the hot refrigerant passes through a heat exchanger and heats the water in the tank. The heat pump and the tank form one unit, which sits outside at ground level.
An air source heat pump sits on the Clean Energy Regulator's register of solar water heaters. It earns small-scale technology certificates, or STCs, in the same way as a roof system.

Which hot water size suits your home?
The right size comes down to how many people live in the home and how they use hot water. iStore recommends the 180 litre tank for two to four people, and the 270 litre tank for three to six people, or more.

A home of three or four people sits where the two sizes meet. These things point to the larger tank:
- long showers, or a bath most nights;
- teenagers, or several people showering one after another;
- regular guests;
- a plan to heat the tank once a day, on your solar, so it carries the evening and the next morning.

Where the heat pump goes
The iStore goes outside, on a level base, with room for air to flow around it. iStore's installation manual asks for 500 mm of open space at the air inlet and the air outlet, and 50 mm between the tank and the wall. We place it away from bedroom windows, yours and your neighbours'. We also place it as close as we can to the taps you use most, so hot water reaches them quickly. Run hot water on your own solar
Heating water is one of the biggest uses of power in a home. A heat pump lets your own solar power do that work. Set the timer to the middle of the day, and the heat pump runs while your panels produce the most. The tank then holds the hot water for the evening and the next morning. iStore calls this a thermal battery.
iStore says heating a full 180 litre tank takes about four to five hours, so a cycle that starts by 10am finishes by 3pm.
On Synergy's Midday Saver plan
Midday Saver charges 8.8520c a unit from 9am to 3pm, 24.3431c from 9pm to 9am, and 55.3253c from 3pm to 9pm. A heat pump timed to run inside the 9am to 3pm window draws any extra power it needs from the grid at the lowest rate of the day. Keep its timer clear of the 3pm to 9pm peak.
On Synergy's Home Plan (A1)
The Home Plan charges a flat 33.2621c a unit at any hour. Here the value comes from your own solar: each unit the heat pump takes from your panels replaces a unit bought at that rate. Synergy's DEBS feed-in tariff pays 10c a unit for exports from 3pm to 9pm and 2c at other times, on the first 50 units a day. DEBS is open to systems with an inverter of 5 kW or less.
With a battery
A heat pump and a battery both store your midday solar: the battery as electricity for the evening, the tank as hot water. Together they keep more of what your panels make inside your home. Hot water rebates in WA
In WA in 2026, the incentive for a heat pump is the federal STC discount. Each heat pump on the Clean Energy Regulator's register earns small-scale technology certificates when it is installed. We take their value off your price up front.

At the $38 certificate price we use in our quotes, that is $570, taken off before you pay.
Steps down each January
A 2026 install earns five years of certificates, and a 2027 install four. The scheme ends in 2030.
The WA battery rebate is for home batteries, and so is a WA no-interest loan up to $10,000, powered by Plenti. The certificate rules are published by the Clean Energy Regulator.
How your installation works
- Request Your Quote. Tell us how many people live in the home, what hot water system you have now and where it sits. We will text you to ask for a few photos.
- We size it and price it. We recommend the 180 or the 270 litre and put the price in writing, after the STC discount. Any extra work, such as taking an old system off the roof, is listed in the quote.
- Install day. Your old system is drained and disconnected. The iStore goes onto a level base with room for air to flow. The water is connected with the valves the plumbing rules require, including a tempering valve that keeps the water at your taps at a safe temperature.
- Set to your solar. The timer is set to your solar hours. The iStore is Wi-Fi ready, so you can watch it and adjust it in the iStore app.
- Signed off. Our accredited installers fit your iStore heat pump and sign it off to Positive Energy's completion standards. We stay your point of contact afterwards.
Replacing a solar hot water system on the roof
If your roof system is near the end of its life, we can take it down and put an iStore heat pump in its place at ground level. Removing the old system is priced in your quote. If your roof system still works well, keep it running, and talk to us when the time comes.

The iStore heat pump, the one hot water system we install, starts from $4,090 for the 180 litre and $4,390 for the 270 litre, supplied and installed. Both prices include a standard installation and GST, and are shown after the federal STC discount. Taking an old system off the roof, or moving the hot water to a new spot, is priced in your quote.
What is included in the heat pump price?
The price covers the iStore heat pump, a standard installation where your current hot water system stands, and GST, with the STC discount already taken off. Your written quote lists anything extra before you agree to it.
Is a heat pump a solar hot water system?
In the federal scheme, yes. The Clean Energy Regulator lists air source heat pumps on its register of solar water heaters, and they earn STCs in the same way. A heat pump draws its heat from the air, and on a timer it runs on the power from your own solar panels.
Should I choose a heat pump or solar hot water?
If you have solar panels, or plan to add them, a heat pump makes the most of them. It runs on your midday solar and stores the heat in its tank. It sits at ground level, so your roof stays for panels, and it heats from the air at any time of day. That is why every hot water system we install is an iStore heat pump.

Yes. The federal STC discount applies to heat pumps and solar hot water. The iStore 180 litre and 270 litre each earn 15 certificates in 2026, and we take their value off your price up front. The number falls each January until the scheme ends in 2030. The WA battery rebate is for home batteries, and it is explained on our WA solar and battery rebates page.
Can a heat pump run on my solar panels?
Yes. Set its timer to the middle of the day and it runs while your panels produce the most. The tank keeps the heat for the evening and the next morning. On Synergy's Midday Saver plan, the same window is also the lowest grid rate of the day.
Does a heat pump work in a Perth winter?
